The illustrations of Cody Rocko are quite unique. They’re more sketches than anything, yet they evoke a sense of curiosity and wonder. And, after all, that’s what art should do. He also posts some interesting things (many of a macabre nature) to his Tumblr.

Meet Mark Setteducati. He is a magician, inventor, and artist. He creates toys and other things which he declares to be art, noting:

I guess I’m an inventor because I have a lot of patents and I invent things. But I consider myself more of a magician and an artist than an inventor, because most inventors try to improve the world. They try to create the better mousetrap, or make improvements on something. But for me it’s more of a personal expression.

So, really, Mark is a farmer of imagination. He harvests ideas then shares the crop with the world. And people like him are few and far between.

Back in May of 2007, Matt Novak over at Paleofuture wrote a post about the company Knight Ridder who was exploring the future of newspaper publishing in the form of touch-screen tablets all the way back in 1994. The video you see here showcases their concept of paperless publishing sixteen years prior to the release of Apple’s first iPad.

Almost a decade later Knight Ridder was purchased by The McClatchy Company, who is now the third-largest newspaper company in the United States. And they’re living the Knight Ridder dream with tablet and mobile apps for most of their newspapers like the Miami Herald and Fresno Bee.

I coach two of my sons’ soccer teams, and the night prior to their first games I wanted to remind myself to get game snacks on the way. So at 12:27 a.m. on the Friday night of September 7th I asked Siri to remind me “in the morning.”

Now, a second-rate device might immediately assume “morning” referred to the next calendar day, in my case meaning September 9th because technically at 12:27 a.m. it was already September 8th. But clearly Apple put a lot of work into Siri’s details because she asked me if I was referring to the next calendar morning (the 9th) or the next physical morning (the 8th) based on the fact that I might simply be up late.

People like to scrutinize Apple for any little shortcomings they find with Siri, their new mapping system, and everything else. But I accept the little oddities we find because overall they have created an absolutely outstanding product in the iPhone. And as an interactive designer/developer/architect I appreciate what goes into the product even more.

PBS has a new series that I am very much loving called Off Book. In fact, I posted about it just recently which makes me hesitant about posting about it again right now. But how could I not when they publish an episode called The Art of Web Design?

For veteran web designers this episode is more a champion for the cause than a learning experience, but for most people it nicely summarizes where we veteran web professionals have been this past decade. It features Jeffrey Zeldman, Jason Santa Maria, and Whitney Hess, some of the friendliest and well-spoken people in our industry.

This animation by French designer/videographer Tony Miotto is really slick. It’s an animated comparison of New York and Paris with a distinct European illustration style reminiscent of the Denmark Christmas Seals designed by Erik Petersen in 1962. My only complaint is that it transitions from one concept to the next too rapidly. I found myself wanting to spend more time enjoying/analyzing each set.

Here’s something awesome from 2010 that I completely missed. Designer/artist/author Sven Voelker wrote a book about the history of race-car design called Go Faster—The Graphic Design of Race Cars which promises to be quite remarkable. In a book description the publisher, Gestalten, notes:

Most people don’t know that racing cars from the likes of Porsche and Ferrari were given their looks not by marketing strategists or designers, but by chance. Go Faster is a collection of over one hundred examples of racecar design that documents the carefree anarchy in which they were created.

This is absolutely fascinating to me, because the designs are so amazing overall. Maybe it’s the randomness and design ignorance that helped originate aesthetic wonder. I believe this will garner the attention of designers, auto-race enthusiasts, and anthropologists alike.
